Visual Design Foundation

Visual Design Foundation is our fully online, three month part-time course, built to reinvent your skills for today’s digital market.

In a nutshell, visual design is a fusion of graphic design, branding and user interface design. If you’ve got a background and passion in any of these areas, we can help you kickstart a new direction for your career.

You’ll get your teeth stuck into branding fundamentals and learn what’s necessary to evolve a brand online. You’ll then cover accessible design so your work can be adapted and appreciated by everyone. We’ll also introduce you to the industry’s current favourite tool Figma.

Throughout the course, you’ll get to practise executing digital design across devices with pivotal industry feedback to keep you on track. You’ll also work, support and collaborate with other budding creatives.

Our students

Every so often, alongside the group mentoring and feedback sessions, we touch base with some of the students to talk through their experiences so far. Here’s what Gajan had to say last week.

  • Is this course for me?

If you studied old school graphic design and your portfolio and expertise is mostly print-based, you’ve no doubt felt the need to reinvent yourself or risk getting left behind. Perhaps you’ve already tried to learn digital, but it’s never slotted into place.

Maybe you’re being asked to direct your skills to more and more web or app content but lack the knowledge and confidence.

We hitting any nerves? If so, this course is a match for you.

  • How will I learn?

    Work on a real brief
Learn proper industry workflows by responding to a brief. You’ll discover your creative process and the true meaning of end to end delivery by tackling a project from start to finish as you would in the real world.

    Attend live group mentoring sessions
Connect with peers and your industry mentor on Zoom for five, one-hour group mentoring sessions. Exchange project ideas, get support and clarity on how to smash your upcoming submissions.

    Get pro feedback
Feel confident you’re on track with feedback from a professional visual designer. No meaningless compliments – just critique and advice, specific to you at the end of each block so you can advance.

    Join a community
You don’t have to do this alone. When you enrol, you’ll get to know and network with like-minded pros in the field. Together you’ll learn, make and succeed by connecting on your own group Slack channel before gaining access to the wider alumni community.

    Part-time, around you
This three-month course is entirely online and asks for about 10-15 hours of your time per week. Whether you freelance, work Monday to Friday or you’re busy with the kids, you can flex this around your schedule.

  • What will I learn?

You’ll cover digital design fundamentals and the principles for skilful digital execution. You’ll also reactivate your knowledge of brand fundamentals, including how to build strong and recognisable brand DNA and collaborate in the workspace to craft impactful stories across all digital platforms.

We’ll delve into Figma, the new web-based tool for collaborative vector graphics editing which is fast gaining traction in the industry.

You’ll learn efficient ways to work with design systems to create gorgeous digital visuals, make informed decisions driven by accessibility and adaptability and hone your pitching skills.

Sharing your creative process is vital, so you’ll learn how to walk your clients through your vision from start to solution. The course even covers how to implement user feedback so you can make your designs the best they can be before successfully handing over your final assets.

  • What do I get?

In completing this course you’ll develop the confidence and understanding of delivering a market relevant brief from beginning to end. The work you produce may also add that necessary boost to your portfolio, or even start one off if you’re new to visual design.

So long as you’ve done the minimum number of hours and tasks, you’ll also receive a certificate of participation.

  • What will I need?

Visual Design Foundation covers the technical basics of visual design so that you can brush up on your skills, but we’re not teaching design from scratch. To get the most out of this course, you need to have the following basics:
